Americans and Arranged Marriages

March 8th 2009 11:59
I used to think that the idea of arranged marriages was a crazy, foreign concept. However, the more I read about them the more I wonder about whether it might work for Americans.

This concept has been popular in many countries, India especially and when you look at the statistics, they definitely speak loudly. Their divorce rate is much lower than ours. Are they on to something?

I watched a show about it the other day on some random cable channel. They were showing how they run ads in papers (the parents). In their ads they don't talk about how cute or sweet someone is. Instead they focus on what their education level is, what they do for a living and what hobbies they enjoy.

My youngest son was married once and then divorced. I remember meeting his girlfriend and I remember clearly thinking....she's very sweet and nice but not for him...She'd be more like someone I'd pick for my older son. Well, as it turns out, I was right. They didn't make it and I saw it coming. So I guess there is something to be said for the parents knowing what is best for their child.

Of couse my sons would never go for it, but if they did, I think I could do better at picking a mate for them than they could.

I have spoken to a couple of Indian women about this and they have said the same thing that you say here about parents looking for particular qualities. They also say that the young people are brought together but are not forced into the marriage; and that mostly they are very happy because they are committed to making it work.

Arranged marriages suck and all but what really truly sucks is a culture which forces the brides father to pay dowry to the husband.

How retarded is that? Such a culture is for pussies imo.

I don't think anyone should be "forced" into anything. All I'm saying is that somewhere along the line American's have started doing something wrong. When half of all marriages fail, we obviously are looking for the wrong qualities in a mate.

Most kids want to pick their own mates and I can't argue with that, Cathy. I think the main reason for divorces these days is how easily people can abandon their responsibilities. Couples don't feel they have to stay together because Welfare will pay for the kids. Single parenthood (for mothers especially) is praised and upheld as a virtue. Marriage isn't considered necessary by a large number of people who mass produce children that grow up with the same lack of core values.

Our main problem is that morality, religion and responsibility have been shoved to the back burner and we're living with the results.
