Are there no more honest businesses or people?

Geez, it seems there are scam artists everywhere. Its so frustrating. I've never asked for anything for nothing in my life. I've always worked hard for everything and I'm not complaining about that.
What does bother me is that everywhere I go there seems to be someone waiting in the wings to steal my money. Point in case...I decided I would love to open an EBAY store. My husband is disabled and I thought that even if it made little money it would give him a distraction during the day while I'm at work and a sense of accomplishment. Lots of people do it and while I wouldn't expect to get rich, it was my hope that I could find a few nice products and make a couple of extra bucks. Well, that seems to be a fantasy.
If you do a search for dropshippers or wholesalers and sign up using your business name, you get into all of these sights where you can find any product you want, but their "wholesale" price is higher than you can go to your local department store and purchase item for. Also, if you google the name of the company you are most likely going to find a zillion entries about how they have ripped off people.
So, my thought was, resource China. I found a great place where you can post your buying requirements and manufacturers and wholesalers will contact you. I really believe the site where you can list your posting is legit, however, I was overwhelmed with emails from Chinese companies and sadly when you google them, you get the same results (or maybe worse) than American companies. Oh yes, their prices are way better, but there are forums all over where people have said they sent money and got nothing!
