California Does it Again: Now we can't help people
December 22nd 2008 13:14
Leave it to California to confuse our lives. I saw today that the courts ruled that Good Samaritans can be sued.
I hate the thought that I could be in accident and people just stand around and watch. But in California, at least for the moment, you couldn't blame people for that. The story is about a car accident and a good samaritan pulling a victim from the car because they feared the car was going to explode into flames. The victim ended up a parapalegic and is now saying it was because the good samaritan was reckless pulling them out and that they may not have been in this condition if a professional had saved them. Damn!
Their family probably would have sued bystanders if the car had exploded into flames and the person burned up. It's so sad that today, we have to think about all of our actions (even potentially heroic actions) because we might be sued. Below is the link to the video of this story:

The Political Brief
I used to be an EMT and knew what to do to keep the victims as safe as possible. I would do the same thing again. If someone rescued me or one of my loved ones from an accident, I would be grateful. If they stood there and watched while someone died, I would be furious. Most people are so busy protecting themselves that others cease to matter, Cathy. The Good Samaritan did the right thing. Can we do less?
