Chronology of an Old Woman's Death part 3

About day 5 after Claire’s stroke.
I’m up and getting ready for work and the phone rings. I can see by the caller ID that it is Suzanne, the mother of Ron, the grandson. I hand the phone to my husband because it’s just too early for me.
Suzanne is hysterical saying that all the family is out to get her and her son Ron. She says he has been nothing but a Godsend for the two old folks and that people are just evil. My husband quizzes her as to what she is talking about. She proceeds to tell him that when she came up to her mother’s room that she heard a nurse talking to someone and she was saying that maybe the grandson was starving her. Suzanne says that they could have only heard a crazy story like that from the other brothers and sisters. My husband listened politely until he could get off the phone and call his other sister Sherry, who is a more reasonable soul.
Well, sure enough, she said that someone must have seen what Ron did with Claire’s tray and so it is the talk of the hospital. Sherry said a nurse had come in and asked her if she knew anything, but of course she said no and then the nurse suggested she go out to the house and look around. Sherry told my husband she would do that in about two hours.
Two hours later she calls my husband back to say that there were padlocks on the fridge and no food in the cabinets. So, my husband tells her to call the cops or family services or someone. He also suggested that someone go to the bank and see if they can freeze their mom’s accounts. His final words to her were that she should get a family lawyer.
Two days go by before the phone rings again. This time it’s Karen the youngest sister. She says that everyone is going crazy. Her take on all of it is that Ron has been intimidating Charley and Claire and probably cleaning them out financially. She didn’t know anything about the starving them stuff. Anyway, she said that their mom has a lock box at the house with the will and everything in it. So, Roy tells her, “then go get it.” Karen says she would only go if she knew for sure that Ron wasn’t there. I can see my husband just shaking his head in disbelief. Then he inquires about the old man. Karen says he’s been mentally out of it for over a year. He comes and goes and sometimes doesn’t know anyone. Apparently Ron has been taking him to some Alzimmers overnight care place once a month for five days at a time. He doesn’t even really know what has happened to his wife. Karen says that Ron brought him to the hospital and dropped him off and all he did was stare at her and crap himself.
My husband asked if anyone had considered trying to get him into a nursing home and Karen went off. She said that they had not because it would cost too much money. So my husband reminds her that while they weren’t close to rich they did buy a lot of cds and had a little nest egg. Karen seemed indignant about that stating, “they can’t spend that money, its our money.”
My husband hung up the phone and called Sherry. Sherry tells him that the nurse said the doctor signed an order to have Claire put in a nursing home because she will never be able to function on her own and probably has only a short time to live. Roy asks if they discussed Charley going as well. Of course, she says no. Then it occurred to Roy to ask if anyone had actually talked to a doctor about Claire’s condition and the answer was no, just nurses. What the hell is wrong with these people?
The move to the nursing home comes the following day as does more information about wrongdoings.
