Does your spouse get ticked when you are writing??

November 12th 2006 14:49
Everyone talks about the hard life of a writer and many are just in awe of those of us who can produce unending words on paper. But I find, that of all the people who appreciate what I do....my husband is not one of them.

Don't get me wrong...he's a wonderful guy and is like 99% supportive of anything I do. He even says he's supportive of my writing...and maybe he is, but there is this gray area....

I'm at my computer, typing away.

Him: Hey, what'cha doing?
Me: Working
Him: Working on what?
Me: Working on one of my blogs.
Him: What's a blog?
I sigh loudly...
Him: Hey don't get huffy, I don't know a blog from a frog.
I chuckle and keep typing, because I don't want to lose the thought.
Him: So what are you typing for your blog?
Me: Let me type it and then you can read it.
Him: I don't want to read it...just tell me.
I stop typing...
Me: Okay, I'm typing about our little conversations every time I'm on the computer writing.
Him: What? Who wants to read that? Why would you write that? I'm going out to mow the grass.
Another sigh from me...this time, relief.
Me: Alright, hon, I'll be done by the time you are.

It is sometimes so frustrating. Most of the time when we have these conversations, he is doing nothing...maybe watching television...I guess its just that when a writer writes, we tend to shut those out around us. This is something we have to be careful about.

What do you do to avoid problems with your mate???

I suppose this is why most successful writers were not married. *smile* My husband is so supportive of my writing, he listens to every post before it is published and gives great feedback, "That's good", "well said". Well, that's MY idea of great feedback, anyways.

There have been times when he has been completely frustrated because when I am working, I wouldn't know if the house was burning down. Occupational hazard. The 'save' button could be the most blessed invention of all. I have learned to shut down the computer and respond to him when he is feeling this way. My family has to come first before writing and sometimes, that isn't easy. I finally had to set a work schedule. I take my blogs seriously but I also have to balance them with life. So, from 9:30-10:30p.m. I am writing new posts. I will still respond to new comments as they come in but I am not parked in front of the screen to do it. I have also started carrying around a notebook with me to jot down ideas that come to me for new posts, so that the inspiration isn't lost just because I have a schedule to follow.

Hope this helps!

I'm not good with scheduling because of the hours I work at my job...but I do have a notebook. I guess the toughest part is helping a non writer understand what drives someone who writes.

Hey, thanks for dropping by!

Cathy,
I agree that it is hard to explain the drive. How do you explain the inspiration, the pressure to express something, the desire to put something on paper that is freefloating around in your mind so that you can focus on something else? I suppose you really can't...

Good luck with everything!

It is often connected with 'how will that make money?' and bloggers and other writerrs are often hard pressed to say "now". It does seem difficult for others to understand the other benefits of writing.

And if some money were to come in....great!

Ain't it the truth...bet most spouses would be thrilled if the money was rolling in.

Thanks for dropping by.
