African American?

I'm curious as to others' perception of an African American. Now I like to be politically correct (for the most part), but this topic came up with my coworkers and now I'm not sure if I am correct or not.

I say its anyone who is an American, but has roots in Africa...on this note my coworkers agreed. However, when I told them I have a niece who is African American (and is white as snow), they disagreed and said African Americans are black. They said this title applies only to blacks. I contend that people in the US made that up. My evidence is all of the white African's, along with the blacks I met while in Capetown S. Africa. If they (white or black) came here to the US and became citizens.....would they not be...African Americans???? That's the case with my niece.

A little feedback please????

Interesting question. Guess I haven't given that much thought. I do believe the term is an "American" thing and as such the history of the term may shed light on the question. It derived from something far more derogatory and racist, which leads me to believe that the nature of the term is rooted in color. Though it's a interesting question.

hmm...my concept comes from a literal interpretation. We say Italian American, Native American, etc.

Hey, thanks for dropping by!

Sure. I understand that. But most of those terms are modern "politically correct" terms. I was referencing the historical precedent....It's the history major in me I guess...LOL

Ah yes, good old PC.

If you can lable people you can put them in their place.

I'm American. My father is American, so is my mother. My fathers parents were Italian migrants. My mothers family came to America from England in the 1630s.

I also have Cherokee blood.

The American Indians came from Aisa.

And the whole human race is reported to have spread out of Africa.

What was your question?

African, if you come from Africa has two meanings...

Firstly, it means you...come from Africa.
Secondly, it is a term for a black person who comes from Africa. I`m not sure if it is meant in a derogatory sense or if it was used as a nicer term than some others that history have provided over the years. I don`t think of it as a derogatory reference more just as a word that clarifies descriptions - as in the Caucasian Male would simply immediately conjure up a picture of a white man.
I hope that this doesn`t come across in any racist sense as it was not intended to be at all - just to answer your question in the best way I can.

The term African American means an American of African decent. Which could be any race of person just as long as their from Africaor of African decent. When most people think of Africa they think of black people. Therefore its hard for them to accept any other form of an African American other than black

An African-American is a person BORN in/on the the contnent of Africa that immigrate to the United States, and becomes an American citizen through the Imigration Naturalization process.

The use of the term on persons born in America that have an African heritage per being descendant from slaves were given the term African-American as a multinational, global corporate, and European Government ploy to give the world public the impreesion that Blacks in Africa enjoy the same freedoms and autonomy that Afrimericans enjoy.

This term was bought and sold by Jesse Jackson, and other Black American Civic and political personalities who were given the choice of adopting the term, and claiming it for all Afrimericans, or losing their multi-million dollar funding, so they sold the race out.

Don't be fooled, and thanks for asking the sensible common sense question, an African-American is a person born in Africa, an Afrimerican is a person born in America.
